Choosing your captain and vice-captain for your Fantasy Premier League (FPL) team is crucial, as they could be the players that make the difference.
However, your key players may not feature in the game, and this may make you start to worry about your lost points.
Here’s everything you need to know about how the captain and vice-captain rule works:

What happens in FPL when your captain doesn’t play?
If your FPL captain does not feature in the match (i.e. plays 0 minutes for the entire game), your vice-captain will receive the armband, and the points he earned for that gameweek will be doubled.
If your captain happens to be injured before the match, he is unlikely to feature in the entire match.
In this scenario, your vice-captain will now take over as the captain.
As such, it is very important to choose a vice-captain each gameweek that you think has the second highest potential to score points!
Sometimes, you may need to find the best timings to make an FPL transfer, which you can check out more here.
Your captain may be rested by the manager
However, there may be some scenarios where the player that you select as captain is rested on the bench.
When the manager decides to play your captain off the bench, this will mean that he still plays some minutes during the match.
This is usually the WORST case scenario, as your captain may not have enough time to score a goal, or produce an assist!
Eventually, your captain may only receive 2 points, provided he does not get booked.
The same concept applies to your Triple Captain
In the event that you played the Triple Captain chip in the gameweek that your captain does not play, your vice-captain will be promoted to the Triple Captain and his points will be tripled.
In this scenario, the player’s captain was Hazard, who didn’t play. Interestingly, he chose Craig Dawson as his vice-captain, which netted him an impressive 51 points!
What happens if both your captain and vice-captain do not play in FPL?
In the event that both your captain and vice-captain do not play any minutes during the gameweek and both score 0 points, there will be no players in your team that will have the points doubled.
Sometimes, you may have the worst of luck where both your captain AND vice-captain are not fielded!
As a result, none of your FPL players will be eligible to earn double points.
As such, it is extremely important for you to make sure that your captain and vice-captain will have a high chance of starting the game!
Conclusion
FPL can be an extremely tense game where every decision you make can either win or cost you points.
Since you are allowed to select your FPL captain and vice-captain every week, it’s best for you to choose them carefully before the transfer deadline!
In the event that your captain doesn’t play, he will be automatically substituted from your team, which you can find out more about it here.
